Redes Nature Reserve

Asturias

Between gorges and waters

In 2001, UNESCO declared the Redes Natural Park a Biosphere Reserve. In the south of the Principality of Asturias, beech and oak forests unfold, providing shelter to more than 50 species of mammals and 130 species of birds.

Most of this territory is part of the Nalón river basin, in the municipalities of Caso and Sobrescobio. In this sector, there are heights ranging from 400 to 2,104 meters at Pico Torres.Overall, it is a rugged terrain crisscrossed by waterways, gorges and narrow valleys. The rain has eroded the calcareous substrate, creating karst elements such as chasms and sinkholes. Associated with extensive beech and oak forests are holly, yew and ferns. On the mountain passes, the landscape is complemented by the colors of daffodils, heather and blueberries. This flora creates spaces conducive to the reproduction of protected mammals such as the brown bear and the wolf. The ornithological community also has abundant species (about 130), among which the golden eagle, the Egyptian vulture and the goshawk stand out. The rocky and scrubland areas have different types of birds. Among the game species, the populations of deer, chamois and wild boar are the most abundant. In the domestic sphere, the Asturian mountain cow or casina is the most recognisable.
