Sierra de Castril Natural Park

Land of ravines
The Sierra de Castril is a mountainous area located in the northwest of the province of Granada, bordering the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park in the neighbouring province of Jaén. It is an area of rugged topography, with an abundance of ravines, hills and steep cliffs.
Belonging to the Granada municipality of Castril, the park has heights between 855 and 2,136 metres above sea level. The river Castril runs through it.Its rugged landscape features vegetation that, in the lower areas, is largely made up of species of the genus quercus – mainly holm oak, and forests of Aleppo pines. In more humid areas, these are replaced by gall oak, ash and maple. In the higher parts of the mountains, the predominant species is the bristlecone pine, which then gives way to creeping juniper and Pyrenean broom on the ridges and crags. This vegetation is rounded off by the presence of dense Mediterranean scrubland and fascinating endemic botanical species that are not very widely found. Thanks to the variety of mountain habitats, the fauna also shows a remarkable diversity. Of particular note is the griffon vulture population. Other species of interest include the ibex, mouflon, fallow deer, wild boar, wild cat and marten, among terrestrial vertebrates; and the golden eagle, peregrine falcon and bearded vulture, among birds.

What you need to know
-
Cultural information
The remains of the castle of Castril tower over the village, a large part of the mountain range and the valley. From the remains of the towers and walls, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the area.
-
Environmental information
The Sierra de Castril, very steep and made of mostly limestone rock, is very deep due to the erosive effects of the abundance of water, since the Castril River and its tributaries have a powerful flow for most of the year and caves and grottoes proliferate there, such as the Cueva del Muerto and the Cueva de Don Fernando.

Information for visits
Access from Seville and Granada must be via the A-92 motorway. After crossing the town of Guadix, leave the motorway on the N-342 towards Baza and follow the route to Benamaurel (A-4200) and from there take the B-roads to Castril (GR-9105, A-326). The visitor centre is on the edge of Castril town, on that same A-326 road towards Pozo Alcón.
