It is one of the best-preserved regions in terms of wildlife and, especially, for its excellent forest areas.

The park is located in the central mountains of the northern Iberian range, in the region of Cameros in La Rioja, bordering the province of Soria.This protected area is home to some of the best examples of woodlands in the Iberian mountain range. These include natural forests of Scots pine, beech and oak, and other extraordinary species such as birch, sessile oak, mountain holm oak and black pine. Also appearing are linden trees, maples, rowans, mountain elms, yews, aspen trees and ash trees.Mammals include foxes, wild boar, deer, squirrels and wildcats in the forests, and otters and Pyrenean desman in the rivers. There are numerous species of forest birds of prey, such as the goshawk, sparrowhawk, honey buzzard, booted eagle, common buzzard and short-toed eagle. Nocturnal birds such as the long-eared owl and the tawny owl are also seen. The mountain range is considered an area of ​​international importance for the passage of migratory birds.

What you need to know


  • Cultural information

    The town of Villoslada de Cameros, where the interpretation centre is located, stands out for its mountain architectural ensemble and its parish church of the Virgen del Sagrario. Nearby, 9 km away and in the middle of the mountain, is the baroque Hermitage of the Virgin of Lomos de Orios, with its wide external staircase. At another point in the park, at the foot of the Piqueras tunnel that connects with the neighbouring province of Soria (highway N-111), is the Transhumance Interpretation Centre, where you can learn more about the way of life of the shepherds of this region of Cameros until just a few decades ago.

  • Environmental information

    The wealth of flora and fauna, which has been magnificently preserved, and the remnants of the glacial relief of the Iberian mountain range, are this park's biological hallmarks. Its highest peaks are at an altitude of over 2,000 metres.

    The starting point for the visit to the park is the town of Villoslada de Cameros, where the Natural Park Interpretation Centre is located, at the beginning of the LR-333 road to Montenegro.
